Latham Selected to Chair House Transportation Appropriations Panel

Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, has been chosen by his colleagues to lead the House appropriations subcommittee that handles transportation funding during this session of Congress. Latham previously had served as the panel's ranking minority member when Democrats controlled the House of Representatives.

Latham was named chairman of the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee last Friday. In a statement, Latham said the leadership position will allow him to help rein in federal spending and improve the national economy.

"I'm grateful and humbled by the opportunity to serve the American people in this capacity," Latham said. "I plan to get to work immediately looking for ways to scale back the federal budget and give American families and businesses the economic certainty they're demanding. I'll devote my legislative efforts to cutting spending and waste, getting a handle on the national debt, and putting our economy back on track."

Latham has served as a member of the House Appropriations Committee since his second term in Congress. He is now in his ninth two-year term.
