AASHTO to Address Key Transportation Issues

Briefings on the latest transportation issues are scheduled for the AASHTO Spring Meeting, which takes place May 19-23 in Natchez, MS.

During a series of workshops, roundtables, and presentations, participants will hear the latest and speak their minds on a spectrum of key issues such as:

  • Reauthorization of the Federal Highway and Transit Programs: The current highway and transit programs have been extended until the end of the year, and funds have been provided to prevent a Highway Trust Fund meltdown. Now the real work is underway in Congress to develop a multiyear authorization bill.
  • Climate Change and Energy Legislation: What are the prospects for a carbon tax to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and to help reduce dependence on foreign oil? Will such a tax shut down any prospects for new transportation revenue?
  • Performance Management: What measures are federal agencies and congressional staff considering and what role will states play?
  • Smart Transportation: Fourteen states are engaging in a new technical service initiative to examine ways in which "livability" can be built into programs and projects.
  • Intercity Passenger Rail: The federal government recently awarded $8 billion in economic recovery grants for high-speed and intercity passenger rail. What are the next steps in putting projects on the ground and building public confidence?
