Ocel Delivers AASHTO Technical Committee's Memorial Lecture

Justin Ocel, a research structural engineer for the Federal Highway Administration, was honored last week as the recipient of the 2010 Robert J. Dexter Memorial Lecture by committees from the American Iron and Steel Institute and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

The program was instituted in 2005 by AISI's Steel Market Development Institute Steel Bridge Task Force and the AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures' Technical Committee T-14 for Structural Steel Design, in memory of Dexter, an internationally recognized expert on steel fracture and fatigue problems.

This year's lecture provided an opportunity for Ocel, who is early on in his structural engineering career, to make a presentation on his bridge activities to the institute's Steel Bridge Task Force during its semiannual three-day meeting in Washington. Ocel's presentation was titled "Fatigue Analysis of a Ship-Loading Structure."

Ocel received his Bachelor of Science and doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota and his Master of Science degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
