AEM Launches Campaign to Encourage Infrastructure Investment

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers unveiled Wednesday a national campaign in Washington to encourage Congress to invest in America's infrastructure. AEM's launch of the "I Make America" campaign came on the day before the one-year anniversary of the expiration of the 2005 transportation authorization law known as "SAFETEA-LU."

AEM was joined by Mike Rowe from the Discovery Channel show "Dirty Jobs" to kick off a grassroots crusade to promote the creation of U.S. manufacturing jobs by increasing the investment in infrastructure across the United States.

"America's infrastructure is the connective tissue that keeps society out of the ditch," Rowe said in a statement. "Our roads, railways, runways, and the stuff we can't always see are falling apart around us. Fixing the infrastructure is a job that will have no end, but if we don't get started, it'll be the end of us."

AEM President Dennis Slater expressed frustration at the lack of progress Congress has made in passing new transportation funding and job-creation bills. He said he hopes that through this campaign, officials in Washington will get the message that Americans want the economy to improve and infrastructure investment is a way to accomplish that objective.

"America needs a new manufacturing plan that creates jobs," Slater said. "We need to improve America's economy by rebuilding its infrastructure."
