September Driving Up 1.5%, Sets Record for Month |
|
Americans drove 1.5% more miles this September than they did in September 2009, marking the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year increases in vehicle miles traveled, according to data released by the Federal Highway Administration.
Vehicles traveled 247.771 billion miles this September compared to 244.119 billion miles in September 2009, according to the latest "Traffic Volume Trends" report from FHWA. September driving this year set a new record for the month, eclipsing by 1% the previous high for that month recorded in 2007. During the first nine months of this year, Americans drove 2.255 trillion miles, 0.5% more than during the same period in 2009. Year-to-date driving is down 1.4% from the peak recorded in 2007, however, but is 9% higher than a decade ago. The September report is available at bit.ly/VMT0910.
